Every so often while reading this, I'd have to stop and yell, "How can you be black AND HAVE SLAVES???" I realize this was the basic premise of the book, but I just couldn't handle it. Anyway, I thought this was a gorgeous piece of writing. Difficult to deal with, but really beautiful.

This was the first Jodi Picoult book I have read now I know why she has such a strong following. House Rules is a moving story of a son, Jacob, with Asperger’s syndrome who is accused of murder. Everyone around Jacob is affected, mostly his mother and brother but even as far reaching as the arresting detective. I would highly recommend this book especially if you enjoy a good cry.

I listened to this book on audio and it was very entertaining. At some times, the historic portion of the book seemed a bit nonsensical.
