While I appreciated his historical grounding of the Cinderella tale in Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, Mirror Mirror wasn't as engaging. I found it very convoluted and clunky, with the history overpowering the story. It definitely seemed like he was worrying more about craft than story-telling, so the heart of the story was lost for me.
Although I loved The Corrections, truly, when I finished it I didn't really love Franzen himself. I was more impressed with some of the decisions he had made, like the floating perspective... I suppose I had some respect for him, because I felt his novel was successful. But when I read these essays I actually started to like Franzen the person. He's so honest with himself about why his own work has been successful and what huge mistakes he has made, and I cannot imagine that it's easy to publish such thoughts.
