I particularly like the author's account of lobster eating on Pacific equatorial islands. The villagers use the ocean as a toilet/ waste disposal system. Imagine their reaction when the non-natives express their preference for lobsters in the reef (eats fish waste, etc. in the ocean).
awesome. did you know that lobsters can only travel for 24 hours before they have to take a rest? what it's like to drive a mile-long coal train, or a tugboat, or an 18-wheeler? I lvoe john mcphee.
This is the fifth book by Anita Shreve that I have read - I loved Testimony and Light on Snow, hated A Wedding in December and was ambivalent about The Weight of Water. Eden Close was quite a subtle but powerful story and I liked the way it was written between past and present, eking out the knowledge of the two main characters - Eden and Andrew, building up a picture of them both and their lives. It was fairly predictable but no less enjoyable for that. I really enjoyed it and wish there had been more to it. I particularly liked the imagery of the hot, sultry days and building storm reflecting the approaching climax in the renewed relationship etween Andrew and Eden. Very well written with just enough suspense.
