This novel is subtle, angry, riveting, beautiful -- a brilliant picture of how fragile contentment is. It perfectly captures how accomplished women are ignored by men -- by smart, charming, caring men who love and respect women, but are somehow allowed to "forget" half the population. It's months later (March, 2009) and I still cannot get enough of Unless. I brought an extra copy (I buy them up at secondhand stores so that I can pass them along) to school to loan a friend, opened the book at random, and was blown away: "I'm supposed to be Reta Winters, that sunny woman, but something happened when her back was turned." I know how that feels; I'm living that right now.
Tedious and mundane, despite all the magic.
